We meticulously research and verify the information presented in our articles. By consulting reliable sources and ensuring factual accuracy, we are committed to providing readers with well-informed, trustworthy content.

With over 9 years of consulting experience and direct partnerships with several LLCs and registered agent services, I've personally walked 20+ entrepreneurs through the Louisiana formation process — including a few who came to me after making expensive mistakes trying to figure it out alone.

Our team at VentureSmarter dug into the Louisiana SOS website and geauxBIZ portal to map out every filing option and exactly how long each one takes.

The fastest way to start an LLC in Louisiana is expedited processing — your documents jump ahead of everything else received that day. If speed matters, that's your move.

You can also use any of these professional Louisiana LLC formation services to handle the whole thing on your behalf.

Quick Summary

  • It takes 2-3 weeks to form an LLC in Louisiana by mail and 7-20 business days if you filed online.
  • The state offers expedited service: same-day processing costs $50 while 24-hour approval costs $30.
  • Between March 2023 and March 2024, Louisiana small businesses opened 11,047 new establishments, according to the SBA Office of Advocacy [1].
  • I always advise clients to make sure that the documents they submit are compliant with the state’s requirements to facilitate the filing within the standard timeframe.

What is The Fastest Way to Start an LLC in Louisiana?

The SOS offers two expedited options: same-day processing or 24-hour accelerated service. Both cost extra on top of the standard filing fee, but if you're trying to get up and running fast, the price difference is minimal.

One thing worth knowing: Louisiana saw a -0.6% dip in business filings between the first nine months of 2022 and 2023 — 61,204 applications filed in 2023 versus 61,585 in 2022. It's a small shift, but it tells you the SOS isn't exactly drowning in volume, which is good news for your turnaround time.

Before you file, make sure your Louisiana LLC operating agreement is in order. Getting that wrong can slow everything down.

LLC Processing Time in Louisiana

Processing time is simply how long the SOS takes to approve your application once they have everything they need. Shorter than you'd think — if you choose the right method.

The SOS accepts filings five ways: online, by mail, by fax, in person, and via expedited service [2].

Here's what each one actually looks like.

1. Expedited Processing Time (same-day processing + $50, 24-hour turnaround + $30)

The SOS expedited option bumps your LLC formation paperwork — and any certified copies or certifications — ahead of the standard queue.

Here are the following accelerated service options:

  • $50 for same-day expedited processing (4–6 hours)
  • $30 for 24-hour processing

When I filed my most recent Louisiana LLC, I went with same-day processing and had approval in about 4 hours. Both expedite fees are on top of the standard $100 filing fee — so budget accordingly.

2. Mail Processing Time (5–7 Business Days Plus Mail Time)

Mail filings take 5–7 business days after the SOS receives your documents — and that's before you factor in actual transit time.

I mailed my articles of organization to the Secretary of State's office (P.O. Box 94125, Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9125) with a $100 filing fee. For mail submissions, you can pay by check or money order only.

3. Online Processing Time (1–2 Business Days)

Online is the sweet spot for most founders who don't need same-day approval. Filings through the geauxBIZ portal typically process in 1–2 business days — fast, and you don't have to leave your desk.

Create an account at geauxBIZ, fill out the Articles of Organization form, and upload your documents. The portal accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. One heads-up: there's an extra $5 statutory convenience fee tacked on at checkout.

4. Louisiana LLC Processing Time In Person (7-20 business days)

Walk-in filings are processed at 8585 Archives Avenue, Baton Rouge, LA 70809. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. — but get there by 4 p.m. if you want staff to actually have time to process your paperwork that day.

Without expedited service, you'll leave your contact info and the SOS will reach out when your filing is done. Standard timeline runs 7–20 business days, which makes in-person one of the slower options unless you pay for expediting.

5. Louisiana LLC Processing Time by Fax (7-20 business days)

Fax filings fall into the same 7–20 business day window as in-person submissions.

When I had to file the LLC documents by fax, I learned that the state requires you to provide the following:

  • A cover sheet or letter
  • LLC name
  • Incorporator's name and phone number
  • Postal address

Follow the fax instructions exactly. The Commercial Division will reject your application if anything's off — and that means starting the clock over.

If you need it faster, you can request expedited processing for faxed documents just like any other filing method.

"Working with someone who knows Louisiana's business laws can cut through a lot of the back-and-forth that slows down LLC formation."

Factors Influencing The Formation Timeline Of Louisiana LLCs

Here are several reasons that may affect the processing time of your Louisiana LLC:

  • Method of filing: This is the biggest variable. Expedited processing gets you approved in hours; standard mail can take two weeks or more once you add transit time.

  • Workload volume: The SOS manually reviews applications, so a spike in filings can push your timeline out. There's not much you can do about it — but choosing online or expedited gives you the best shot at a predictable turnaround.

  • Documentation issues: Louisiana will reject documents that don't meet state requirements. If that happens, you'll need to correct the error and refile — which adds days, sometimes weeks, to the process. I've seen this trip up first-time founders more than anything else.
