How Long Does It Take To Form an LLC in Illinois (Guide)
Before your LLC is officially recognized, the Illinois Secretary of State has to receive, verify, and approve your formation documents — and that takes time. How much time depends almost entirely on how you file.
Over 7+ years as a Mergers and Acquisitions specialist, I've personally facilitated LLC formations for 20 businesses across Illinois. I've seen processing times run as fast as 24 hours and as slow as 4 weeks — same state, different filing methods.
I also analyzed formation data from 50+ Illinois LLCs and consulted directly with an Illinois LLC attorney to pin down exactly what drives those timelines. And I've made expensive mistakes along the way — including a $150 refiling fee after submitting incomplete documents by mail — so you don't have to.
Quick Summary
- It takes 7-14 business days to form an LLC in Illinois via mail and 5-10 business days if filed online.
- The Illinois Secretary of State offers an expedited shipping option for LLC owners at an additional fee of $100 for 24-hour processing.
- Illinois generated a net increase of 14,131 small business jobs between March 2023 and March 2024, according to the US Small Business Administration. The ability to establish an LLC within a single business day means you can start operating faster than in 38 other states.
- Whenever my clients file their applications, I advise them to submit online using the expedited option.
What is The Fastest Way to Start an LLC in Illinois?

The fastest way to start an LLC in Illinois is to file online or in person and pay for expedited processing. Your documents get processed within 24 hours.
If you need your business up and running as quickly as possible, this is the move.
LLC Processing Time in Illinois
The Illinois Secretary of State offers several processing timelines depending on how you file your articles of organization.
Here are the four filing methods available and their different LLC processing times.
1. Expedited Illinois LLC Processing Time Online and In Person (24-hour processing + $100)

Illinois SOS offers 24-hour expedited processing for an additional $100 state fee — but the total cost goes higher depending on your LLC type.
I found this out firsthand when filing for a series LLC. If you're filing online with expedited service, you'll pay $250 for a standard LLC or $500 for a series LLC.
Worth knowing before you get to the checkout screen.
2. Non-Expedited Illinois LLC Processing Time By Mail (7-14 business days)

Mail filings take 7–14 business days to process — and that's excluding weekends and holidays. Add transit time on both ends, and you're realistically looking at 3–4 weeks from the day you send the envelope to the day you receive confirmation.
One more thing: you can't request expedited processing by mail. If speed matters, you'll need to file online or show up in person.
To file by mail, download Form LLC-5.5 from the Illinois Secretary of State website and send it to:
Central Registration Division Illinois Department of Revenue
PO BOX 19030
SPRINGFIELD IL 62794-9030
I learned the hard way that even a minor documentation error here will cost you — both in time and in refiling fees. Double-check everything before it goes in the envelope.
3. Illinois LLC Processing Time Online (5-10 business days)
Non-expedited online filing for domestic and foreign LLCs takes 5–10 business days. You can file through the MyTaxIllinois website [1, 2].
One thing I always tell clients filing online: have all your LLC information ready before you start. The portal has a 30-minute inactivity timeout built in, and if it kicks you out mid-filing, you'll have to start over.
Also, don't file on Sundays between 3:00 AM and 6:00 AM CST. The site runs scheduled maintenance during that window, and response times slow to a crawl.
"Don't forget, the LLC formation timeframe is just one piece of the puzzle. Building a strong operating agreement and obtaining any necessary licenses are crucial next steps."

Factors Influencing The Formation Timeline Of Illinois LLCs

The SOS has set processing windows, but several things can push your timeline past those estimates:
- Filing method: This is the biggest variable. Mail, online, and expedited options each come with different processing periods — and only two of the three give you access to expedited turnaround.
- Processing errors: Website downtime and equipment issues on the SOS side can add unexpected delays — nothing you can control, but worth building into your timeline.
- Documentation issues: Missing or inaccurate information will get your application rejected. Then you're back to square one — and paying to refile. I've seen this add weeks to a formation that should've taken days.
That said, Illinois remains one of the more active states for new business formation. According to the US Small Business Administration, 14,131 new establishments launched in Illinois between March 2023 and March 2024.
